Saliphenesin (Chlorphenesin) is synthesized from p-chlorophenol and glycidol using a tertiary amine or quaternary ammonium salt catalyst. It shows fungicidal activity against Aspergillus niger, Penicillium pinophilum, Candida albicans, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. As a cosmetic biocide, it inhibits microbial growth on the skin, reducing odour, and is classified by the World Health Organization as a topical antifungal. As a preservative, Chlorphenesin prevents viscosity shifts, pH changes, emulsion breakdown, discolouration, and odour formation.
